Roll up! Roll up! For the Orctober 2020 - Middlehammer Legacy Project Memmorial Mash-up!

 

 

The idea of a Legacy Project is that each person paints and contributes one miniature to a themed/colour schemed group of miniatures, and then there is a lottery to decide who wins the group as a legacy of the project. Orctober is of course the hobby world’s annual celebration of all things Orctastic and Goblinoid. Combine the two…. BOOOM!

All are welcome to get involved and all you have to do is contribute one of the models for the project, painted, and if desired converted, complete with a short back story (approx. 200 words) and Warhammer Fantasy Battle 4^th/5^th edition stat line.

If you want to see how it worked in previous years you check out the dangerous and deadly  40k Mercenary Strikeforce from 2017, the chaotic Warbands of the Weird and Wonderful from 2018, and the fantastic 40k Super Villains from 2019.

As many of you will know the community lost a valued member in July this year as our friend Mikkael "Igge" Holmberg passed away, having fought his battle with cancer with stoicism and a wry smile. He was known widely as a generous, thoughtful, and supportive member of the wargaming community. Igge was a true international citizen and those lucky enough to meet him in person remember how he would turn up to tournaments dressed in costume to match his famous Green and Orange Dwarven host! Those of us who knew him through online hobby groups all speak of his knowledge of the hobby, his humour, and integrity as a trader. He will be sadly missed. 

 

Igge took part in many of the Middlehammer group’s monthly painting challenges, including the Legacy Projects, and I always valued his support. It was totally in character that when his was the name pulled out of the hat he politely insisted on declining the prize so that it could go to another member of the community.

Igge’s other love in the hobby world was Orcs/Orks! So this year the Middlehammer Legacy Project is an Orctober Memmorial Mash-up, with a Green and Orange (and Black) colour scheme in Igge’s honour.

A fellow Middlehammer Admin was talking with Igge before his passing about the possibility of a sponsored painting challenge for a charity of his choice. With his characteristic and very practical wisdom, Igge replied that if people wished they could donate to local charities that look to make a difference in their own communities.

Most of all we would like this to honour Igge by bringing people across the hobby community together, so please don’t feel this is only for those who knew him – in his spirit this is very much a hobby project for the whole community J

Here are some key questions and answers about how the project will run:

How does this Legacy Project thing work anyway?

All participants agree to paint and contribute one model to the pre-agreed theme (decided via the Middlehammer facebook page) of Orctober. You paint the model and post it to your friendly neighbourhood organiser. All contributors are entered into a draw, and the winner out of the hat wins the whole squad for their collection!

NB: I am going to contribute a mini, but I won't be putting my name in the draw.

If we are really lucky and get loads of entries then we may split the minis into two warbands as we have previously J

What's the time frame involved?

The project officially starts as of Thursday 1^st October and painting/modelling time lasts a month so you should have your model completed by end of October 2020. But you can get underway now in terms of registering interest and choosing your mini getting it undercoated ready for Orctober 1^st

Models to be safely packed and posted and with the organisers by Friday 20^th  November 2020, with the draw taking place as soon as possible once we have all the entries in.

What models can I contribute?

Anything that you think fits with the theme of Orctober in the world of Warhammer Fantasy. It’s a broad theme to encourage participation but the basic idea is that it is Orctober inspired by the Middlehammer period of Warhammer Fantasy Battle (whatever that means to you!)

It doesn't even have to be Games Workshop, if you have something from another range or manufacturer then all good as long as you can make it fit the theme. Metal, plastic, or resin minis are all acceptable. Conversions are definitely welcome, but again, not essential. If people want to branch out into small monsters or animal mounts etc. then that is all good.

How will this gathering of greenskins look coherent?

Normally, the colour scheme is decided by the people participating through discussion on the Middlehammer Facebook group – this year however it is has been set in honour of our friend Igge and his famous penchant for Green and Orange. The green mostly takes care of itself during Orctober, so the main colour is Orange, with Black as the secondary colour to mark Igge’s passing.

Secondly, and again taking our lead from those who have gone before us, the winner does the basing for the squad. This will ensure that a) the group is coherently based and b) the squad fits into their own collection.

Primary colour =  ORANGE
Secondary colour = BLACK

Colours/finishes of armour, weapons, straps, gear and so on are all up to the individual painter to select, and please feel free to use the full range of Orc/Goblin skin tones ;)

What about Basing?  

Please use a plain black round base of the appropriate size for your model. The winner can then finish the basing to their liking once they get there lucky hand on them!

How will the project work?

1.Participants need to register what model they will be contributing via the Middlehammer page as above. This blog will be updated with details as we go along.
2. Completed models, with a plain black round base of appropriate size, need to be sent to me (Bristol, UK) at the participants expense, and received by Friday 20^th November 2020 (postal address to be supplied privately to participants). PLEAE NOTE: I will also be looking to arrange US based postal coordination point to reduce costs.
3. Each model to be accompanied by a name, short back story (approx. 200 words), and a Warhammer Fantasy Battle 4^th/5^th stat line (via email or facebook message).
4. The draw will take hopefully take place before the end of November depending on the postal service!.
5. The winner will be announced here and on the Middlehammer facebook group as soon as the draw has taken place. The completed Warbands will be sent to the winner(s) via recorded delivery (at my expense), hopefully to arrive over the holidays J
6. The winner posts a picture of them enjoying their new minis on the Middlehammer facebook page with a massive cheesy grin and a big thank you to everyone who took part! 
7. It would be great if the winner would also be up for writing a short post to go with said pictures and cheesy grin, saying how they are going to use and enjoy the minis J
